Ready for the Challenge

April 2022 Devotional

You, dear children are from Elohim [God] and have overcome them, because the One who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.
1 John 4:4 NIV

It is one thing to be challenged in private without a judging, expectant audience that will witness what could be your proudest moment or your greatest failure. It is quite another thing to be challenged publicly.

In Exodus 4:1-4, Moses had an experience in private that he would later be asked to demonstrate in the presence a stubborn king who already had nothing but disdain for him and before a people desperate for a deliverer. By himself on the remote side of a mountain, Father Yahweh having revealed Himself to the former prince, told him to throw down his staff/rod. When the rod hit the ground, it transformed into a snake. Not your ordinary garden snake, as I am sure Moses was familiar with all kinds of desert creatures, but Moses’ response tells me that this was a fearsome serpent – he ran away from it. But Yahweh told him, “reach out your hand and take it by the tail.” Moses was discovering in this moment that he had been given authority over this creature if he only obeyed. He was safe from any harm or threat, and the rod returned to its former function and place in the hand of the shepherd. How awesome it must have been for Moses to experience these exhilarating emotions one after the other, curiosity, awe, fear and power – all in one day.

Well this experience must have been at the forefront of Moses’ mind when he was given similar instructions in Exodus 7:8 in front of an audience. He knew exactly what to expect, at least he thought he did, until there was a plot twist. Moses went into this challenge with some amount of confidence, a threatening snake would appear and those who watched it would perhaps have the reaction he had in private, they would run away in fear. But not so quickly, said the challenger – Pharaoh had some tricks of his own and produced multiple snakes. But this challenge did not end in embarrassment, one rod from Yahweh Almighty was enough to match any number of snakes that the enemy brandished. The lesser snakes were devoured.

You see, the challenge was not just to Moses and Aaron, it was and always has been a challenge to our Everlasting God, Yahweh who had sent them. As it was back then, from the beginning and until the end, every challenge to our King will only prove that He is Almighty.

This is a reminder that every challenge that you face will be coming against the Spirt of Yahweh in you – do not be discouraged or become fearful by the plot twists and unexpected turn of events in what you thought would be a routine battle. Greater is He that is within you than he that is in the world. Remain confident that ‘what you have in your hand’ will be unstoppable when given in obedience to Father Yahweh and He will demonstrate His sovereignty again and again.

  1. I had not noticed before that the scripture said Moses fled from the serpent. Reflection into the many times we flee, shy away from, or for lack of a better word reject what Yah does or is doing because of fear, missing an opportunity to let His power and might be shown through us. I’ve personally learnt this lesson. Hallelujah that greater is He that is with in me.
